New process of opening an account with a selfie in Bank Millennium

Bank Millennium simplifies the method of opening online accounts using "selfies". A new identity verification process has been embedded in the mobile app. In the future, the bank will also use the electronic layer of ID cards and accept other identity documents. The project was carried out in cooperation with Onfido, a world leader in the field of identity verification and authentication, simplifying identity for everyone.

The ability to confirm identity based on photos of an ID card and face opened the way to launch a bank account without the need to visit a branch. The solution implemented at Bank Millennium over two years ago is becoming increasingly popular. Until now, users would start the registration procedure on the website. The new process takes place fully in the bank's mobile application and is more intuitive.

- Opening an account by selfie is very convenient and customers are happy to use this method. We wanted to make our process even more user-friendly and accessible on most devices. We based the changes on a detailed analysis of the results so far, we also looked at the best market standards and, as always, we took into account the opinions of users. Now the new customer finishes the process already logged in to the application, with an active account that he can immediately use - says Halina Karpińska, Director of the Electronic Banking Department at Bank Millennium.

Bank Millennium's mobile application is available in App Store, Google Play Store and Huawei AppGallery. After installation, on its main screen, select the option "Create an account and activate the application". If directed to the application by the bank, client immediately goes directly to the process, where he is asked for a telephone number and basic data. Next the user will be prompted to take a photo of the ID card and a selfie video. First, we check if the identity document is authentic, and then we compare the data with the user's face on the recorded video. This ensures the person presenting the identity is its legitimate owner and is physically present. The information from the identity document will be recognised and entered into the application automatically. Then authorisation of the contract for maintaining a personal account is done by entering the code from the SMS message from the bank. In the last step, the customer sets the password and code for the application and enables mobile authorisation for the transactions performed. Importantly, you can immediately use the account, because the registration and data verification process should not take more than a few minutes.

The modern solution implemented by Bank Millennium will enable in the future to read data from ID cards with an electronic layer. As part of the project, it is planned to support other identity documents. The partner in the implementation is Onfido, a company recognised as a world leader in the field of identity verification and authentication. In their solutions, the entity uses award-winning artificial intelligence algorithms based on machine learning to automate secure and accurate verification, ensuring a fast and seamless onboarding experience for users. It helps Bank Millennium onboard its customers in as little as five minutes while remaining KYC compliant and reducing fraud. Onfido cooperates with some of the largest companies around the world.

In addition to opening and managing an account as part of the Bank Millennium mobile application, customers can use a number of additional services. The continuously developed catalogue currently includes, i.a., purchases of public transport and parking tickets, cinema tickets, motor insurance, payments for motorways and submission of applications for family benefits. The new Millennium 360° account also integrates personalised discounts from the goodie shopping platform, where users can receive a refund of some of the money spent on purchases. The bank offered the possibility of purchasing top-up codes in the application, e.g. games or multimedia, and soon it will provide the CyberSupport service, i.e. monitoring of important personal data on the web.
