Another graduate of Portuguese B.A. Studies at the Institute of Iberian and Ibero-American Studies of the University of Warsaw was awarded a research scholarship from Bank Millennium and Camõesa Institute. This time the winner is Katarzyna Maź - best student of the B.A. course started in 2016/17 academic year and ended in 2018/19. The scholarship winner is now continuing her scientific career on the Master’s Studies. The scholarship sponsored by Bank Millennium in the amount of 1500 euro will allow the graduate to go to Portugal to acquire more advanced knowledge of the Portuguese language and culture.

Bank Millennium has been funding scholarships for the best students since 7 years. Last year it extended its cooperation with the University of Warsaw and the Camões Institute for further three years, until 2022. By awarding the best students, the bank supports development and enables greater intercultural experience of Polish students. - As a bank with Millennium bcp- Portugal’s biggest private bank - as its shareholder, we perceive a particular role in creating education opportunities, which bring our countries together and are conducive to getting to know each other and foster good relations. We know that supporting talented academic youth is the best investment for the future – João Bras Jorge, Chairman of the Management Board of Bank Millennium, said.

Katarzyna Maź finished the first stage of her education with a BA exam regarding her thesis “Dystopian presentation of social inequalities in contemporary Brazil. Analysis of the first season of 3% series (2016)”, written under supervision of Gabriel Borowski Ph.D. Apart from receiving highest average scores the student was also involved in activity of the Pisca-Pisca Portuguese theatre, where she starred in three plays: Conversas de mulheres (2017), A Casa na Fronteira (2018) and Além as estrelas são a nossa casa (2019). She admitted that attending a language course in Portugal is a great development opportunity for her. - For me the Portuguese language became a window to the world of Lusophony. It is an instrument, which gives beautiful sounds but requires the player to keep working and stay committed. This is why I am so happy that my efforts were rewarded by Bank Millennium, which decided to give me a scholarship allowing me to go to Portugal and to take part in a language course and to get to know its fascinating culture up close. This financial support will allow me to have greater knowledge of the Portuguese language and to gain an insight into the art and culture of this country with greater commitment – Katarzyna Maź, this year’s scholarship winner, said.

The scientific scholarships programme emerged at the initiative of the Camõesa Institute, to enhance the interest of the Polish academic community in learning the Portuguese language and culture. Universities and companies with Portuguese capital operating in Poland were involved in the project. One of such companies is Bank Millennium, which since 2013 has been supporting students of the Institute of Iberian and Ibero-American Studies of the University of Warsaw, awarding annual scholarships to the best student of Portuguese Studies. In previous years the scholarship from Bank Millennium, the University of Warsaw and the Camões Institute was granted to: Joanna Jaszczukowska (2015/16), Paulina Junko (2016/17) and Anna Kozłowska (2017/18).
