Holiday trips of Poles: where, with whom and for how much
Over 60 per cent of Poles are planning a holiday trip this year, according to the "Finances of Poles" survey commissioned by Bank Millennium. We intend to spend more on vacation than last year. Every second respondent will spend their holidays in Poland.
"Finances of Poles" is a public opinion poll commissioned by the Public Relations Department of Bank Millennium, which provides information on the financial situation of Poles. On the occasion of the holidays, Bank Millennium shares its results on trips and favourite forms of payment abroad.
- We have been carrying out the "Finances of Poles" survey regularly for several years, and its subsequent editions allow us to more and more fully describe the financial situation of Polish residents. This year, we decided to expand the thematic scope of the survey and, in addition to issues related to the financial condition of households, also include housing issues and financial education. These are topics that are increasingly influencing the everyday decisions of Poles. We will publish the results of the survey in stages, sharing them in the following weeks so that each edition is an opportunity for in-depth reflection on challenges and needs - explains explains Iwona Jarzębska, Director of the Public Relations Department at Bank Millennium.
The "Finances of Poles" survey shows that Poles are willing to travel around the country - as many as 78 percent go to another Polish town at least once a year, and one in three does it even four times a year. Foreign trips are less popular - 47 percent travel abroad at least once a year, and 26 per cent do not do it at all.
Most often, we go abroad with our family or children (44 percent of respondents) or with a partner (40 percent). Every fifth respondent travels with friends or acquaintances, and 11 percent of respondents declare that they travel abroad on their own. Only 3 percent of respondents travel to other countries on business in the company of colleagues.
In the "Finances of Poles" survey, Bank Millennium also asked about plans for the coming summer months. This year – as in the previous year – slightly more than three out of five Poles (61 percent) are planning a holiday trip. 18 percent of respondents do not have specific holiday plans yet, and every fifth Pole is not going anywhere.
The survey shows that we will spend more on this year's holidays than in 2024. On average, Poles plan to spend PLN 4161 per person on their main trip (including expenses on transport, accommodation, food and attractions), which is PLN 391 more than last year. 29 percent of respondents plan to spend up to PLN 2500 per person on the trip, and 71 percent will exceed this amount. A year ago, these proportions were 45 percent and 55 percent, respectively.
Interest in holidays in Poland remains at a similar level to last year. Every second respondent is planning a holiday in Poland (last year it was 53 percent), 11 percent have not yet decided on the direction of their main trip. Interest in going abroad increased slightly. 39 percent of respondents intend to spend their main holiday outside Poland (in 2024 it was 36 percent).
How do we pay on vacation? It turns out that most often cash mentioned earlier in Poland (51 percent of respondents do so) or a multi-currency card from a bank or other institution (28 percent). Cash exchanged or withdrawn on the spot is used by 21 percent of travellers abroad, 16 percent by a regular debit card, 12 percent by a credit card, and 9 percent by a card to an account, but with a currency package.
- More and more Poles are deciding to travel abroad, and with it the number of convenient and secure forms of payment is growing. Today, the card to the account has a built-in multi-currency function - it allows you to avoid currency conversion costs, gives access to money at any time and eliminates the need to take a large amount of cash on a trip. In combination with the currency exchange service available in the mobile application, anyone can quickly exchange currencies wherever they are. Credit cards are also an ideal solution for travellers, in our case it is the Visa Global card with unlimited currency payments, which, in addition to payments, offers a number of services to facilitate travel, such as travel insurance, access to airport lounges or moneyback - reimbursement of part of the expenses for travel-related purchases. These are solutions that perfectly fit the needs of modern travellers - says Tomasz Perski, Head of the Customer Solutions Development Team – Cards and Payments at Bank Millennium.
It is worth noting that according to the respondents, currently 39 percent of Poles do not use foreign currencies at all. Going abroad is the main circumstance in which Poles use foreign currencies – half of Poles declare such use of currencies. 12 percent. of Poles save in foreign currencies, 11 percent pay in foreign currencies for online shopping or for foreign services. 5 percent declare that they invest in foreign currencies, and 4 percent work abroad and earn in a foreign currency.
The "Finances of Poles" survey was carried out on 6-12 June 2025 by Ogólnopolski Panel Badawczy Ariadna research agency for Bank Millennium on a representative sample of 1046 people using the CAWI method.
