Interest Rate Swap (IRS)

An Interest Rate Swap (IRS) is a contract, under which the Parties undertake to regularly exchange interest payments in one currency, on the agreed notional amount of the transaction, in agreed interest periods.

IRS is a transaction, in which the Parties undertake to change the interest rate from variable reference rate to a fixed or variable IRS rate. The IRS buyer (payer of IRS rate) pays interest rate accrued at the IRS rate in exchange for interest accrued at the variable reference rate. The IRS seller (payer of the reference rate) pays interest accrued at the variable reference rate in exchange for interest accrued at the IRS rate.

Customer benefits:

  • IRS permits hedging interest rate risk in the long term by defining a fixed cost of financing or interest inflow during the entire period or in a chosen time horizon
  • Setting a fixed cost of financing or interest inflow increases predictability of the investment yield. The transaction may be concluded for the entire duration of the liability or its part
  • Concluding an IRS transaction does not require making changes to the existing loan or leasing agreements (IRS is non-balance sheet instrument)
  • Valuation of a transaction during its existence may be negative with respect to current levels of market interest rates (spot and forward), which means that in case of premature IRS closing, this amount becomes the Customer's liability due to the Bank
  • If in the interest period the level of variable reference rate is lower than the agreed level of IRS rate, the payer of the IRS rate will suffer a loss resulting from negative interest differences in the interest period

Risk description is provided in „Description of risks associated with financial instruments and products offered in the Biznes and Corporate Banking Segment in Bank Millennium S.A.", as available in the Bank's outlets and on the Bank Web site www.bankmillennium.pl.
